description Ortona South is a perfect campground for a quiet, sunny escape to inland South Florida. The campground is set along the Caloosahatchee River portion of the Okeechobee Waterway. Campers will enjoy watching the boats and manatees pass through the Ortona Lock. Alligators, osprey and otters are also frequently spotted in this area. Ortona South is in the Okeechobee Waterway, due west of Lake Okeechobee. Okeechobee means "big water" in the Muskogean Native American language.
drivingDirection From LaBelle, Florida, travel SR 80 8 mi E to Dalton Lane. Turn northon Dalton Lane following signs into the campground.
facilitiesDescription All of the 51 campsites have electric and water hookups. Campers can look forward to hot showers and laundry facilities as well. Waterfront sites are available, but are generally the first to book up.

importantInformation Arriving campers that require the use of the trailer dump station prior to occupying their campsite will be charged the $20.00 use fee as the waste being dumped was not generated on site. No all-terrain vehicles or off-road vehicles allowed. Camping and parking is limited to designated areas only. Parking on the grass or on the roadways is prohibited. The entrance gate is opened at sunrise and closed at sunset. Check-out time is 11:00 a.m. on the day of your departure. Ortona South Campground and St. Lucie South Campground are part of the same water resource project. Both campgrounds fall under the same 14 day maximum in any 30-consecutive day period regulation. Campers cannot stay at Ortona South for 14 days and then camp St. Lucie South for 14 days without camping elsewhere for 16 days. Campers also cannot use different names to get around this regulation. Ortona South is a short drive from Lake Okeechobee, the largest freshwater lake in Florida, spanning 730 square miles. It's shallow for a lake of its size, averaging depths of just nine feet.
recreationDescription Activities here are focused on simple, relaxing pleasures like fishing and strolling the grounds. Largemouth bass, bluegill and crappie are the most commonly caught fish at the piers. A boat ramp and picnic areas are just across the river.
